Scientific name: Withania – Somnifera
Region: India, the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of China.
Growing Information: Native to drier regions, dry warm climates, well drained sandy soil, low water, high light.
History: Withania somnifera was formally described and named by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark work Species Plantarum in 1753. Originally, he classified it as Physalis somnifera. Later, in 1852, the French botanist Michel Félix Dunal reassigned it to the Withania genus, leading to the widely accepted botanical name Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal.
